Marguerite de Angeli and Lapeer

Young Marguerite

Marguerite Lofft was born in Lapeer on March 14, 1889.

"Shad Lofft, my father, took this picture. Papa was the town photographer. Mama made this dress. I was eight years old."
-Marguerite deAngeli

Marguerite deAngeli's birthplace still stands at the corner of Main St. and Oregon St. in Lapeer, Michigan and is a private home. The Lapeer County Historical Society placed a sign marking the site that was unveiled in May 1971 with Mrs. de Angeli in attendance.

The Lapeer City Library was renamed the Marguerite deAngeli Library on August 22, 1981. Mrs. de Angeli was present for the re-dedication of the building in her honor.

The Marguerite deAngeli Library was officially named a Literary Landmark in honor of Marguerite de Angeli on what would be her 121st birthday, March 14, 2010. However, the library was dedicated in a ceremony held on August 22 of that year, the same day that the library was renamed in her honor in 1981. The library became the sixth Literary Landmark in the state and the first in Lapeer County.
