All of the Lapeer District Library's seven branches welcome, and encourage children to use the library at all times.
The library staff is not expected to supervise or monitor children. Those under 3 years of age must be within the visual contact of a parent, guardian or responsible caregiver at all times, including during programs and visits to the restroom.
Children 10 and under must be attended by a parent, guardian or responsible caregiver. The parent, guardian or responsible caregiver (who must be at least 16 years old) shall remain in the Library at all times.
Children of all ages are welcome to enjoy our collections, services and events. Below is some helpful information for parents with minor children.
Frequently Asked Questions
The library cannot place restrictions based on the age of a cardholder. As a public library, it is our responsibility to provide materials that meet the needs of all of the different people in our community. We respect that every family is unique. What is right for some families may not be appropriate for others. As the parent, the responsibility for use of library materials by your child rests ultimately with you.
Accounts may be accessed at any LDL location, by phone or online at www.library.lapeer.org with the library card barcode and PIN. Information about minors accounts can only be given to the adults named on the application.
Anyone can use the self-checkout regardless of age; users can choose either a printed or emailed receipt.
Parent Pack
When signing a minor up for a library card, parents/guardians should be presented with a parent pack.
Each parent pack includes
- Frequently asked questions about children’s accounts.
- Library policies and how to access them.
- Information on 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, Summer Reading Program and Children’s Events.
- An “I Got a Library Card Today!” sticker
- A bookmark to color.
If you have any additional questions please contact any LDL branch.
Internet Access
As with other materials in the Library's collection, it is the Library's Policy that parents or legal guardians are responsible for deciding which library resources are appropriate for their children.
Although we cannot ensure that a child visiting the library will not access content a parent disapproves of, LDL offers public computers with filtered internet access. In compliance with Michigan law, anyone under age 18 is assigned this type of computer, meant to protect them from obscene or explicit material.
The Library urges parents and guardians to discuss Internet use with their children and to monitor their use of this educational tool. Parents and youth patrons are encouraged to talk to the Librarian regarding both the benefits and pitfalls inherent in its use.
Library Policies
